One Step Beyond - Life Imitates Art
Very, very good fun indeed! Although the band name brings to mind Prince Buster and Madness, you won’t find that much brass driven bounciness on here, because this is filthy fun-time, BBQ ready, gorefied grindrocking death metal! In amongst all of that however, there are numerous experimental passages and unexpected chunks of other stuff, bringing to mind the kind of styles, genres or influences that one would not ordinarily associate with most grindcore or death metal. So what we have here is some extremely engaging, accessible material, with heavy bagsfuls of grooving momentum, displaying rather a colourful array of inspirations, influences and creative ideas, applied with the right kind of good humour to make the record a fun journey, but with musicianship sound and rounded enough to prevent it from becoming uninteresting before the excursion comes to a close. Apparently this came out in 2002 on Neoblast Records. Despite being almost exclusively into all things death metal and grindcore back then, hoovering up every scrap of grind I could find, regardless of quality, it seems I missed this wee gem altogether. Luckily, Grindhead have brought it out again for us all to enjoy!
